Born and raised in Vancouver, BC, Benjamin Kikkert is a graduate of the Sheridan College Craft & Design program who has quickly established himself as one of Canada’s leading glass artists having recently received the coveted 2012 RBC Glass Award. An artist whose objects possess a character beyond their medium, Raynes Roberts was inspired by Kikkert’s empathetic treatments of nature and decay created in his sculptural glass work. This new collaboration combines the unconventional textures and forms of molten glass, with the ancient techniques of glass engraving conveyed to evoke nature and the journey of life.
“Going with the Flow” is a unique triptych sculpture portraying the swirling river bed, and the wisdom of the salmon in swimming with the undercurrent against the rushing waters above. The journey of the salmon and the obstacles it faces are numerous and difficult, before the cycle of life is repeated in calmer waters once that final leap of faith has been made.
