Raynes Art+ Design Ltd with Paus + Grun Custom Living Inc. unveil Sustinere Collection
VISIONS OF LIGHT Exhibition, Eliile Showroom Gallery, Toronto, April 4 – 30, 2013
We are delighted to be collaborating with Paus + Grun Custom Living Inc. on a new collection of contemporary furniture designs using reclaimed wood and engraved optical crystal to communicate environmental issues. The newly titled Sustinere Collection (taken from the Latin word for sustainability) will have three design lines AQUA (water conservation) MIGRA (bird migration) and TERRA (land preservation).
Raynes Roberts is no stranger to environmental concerns, and much of his art has been informed not just by the beauty of nature, but also by concern over the ever-shrinking environments animals are faced with. In 2011, he was commissioned by Green Living to create the inaugural Scotiabank Ecoliving Awards, which will be presented again in June 2013 at the Art Gallery of Ontario to three leaders in the world of sustainability across Canada. And last year, he also exhibited his GLASSLANDS Collection of photography focused on sustainability at the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, and is currently developing an even larger scale exhibit of 10 proposed sculptures based on the themes of the sustainability program of The Natural Step Canada.
Paus + Grun Custom Living is equally passionate about the need to conserve the world’s forests, working primarily with reclaimed and salvaged woods to promote an ecologically sensitive ethic in the design and construction of contemporary furniture. Always seeking innovative ways to develop their work by blending new materials towards the common goal of promoting sustainability, the introduction of crystal details to their furniture is totally original in the marketplace. The conservation themes provided by Raynes Roberts adds a new level of design integration that communicates these important messages. Paus + Grun Custom Living have already made their mark in the design world with a feature in Design Lines Magazine. As young Canadian designers, they are invested in providing the finest quality craftsmanship, and feel that Canadians are very aware of their natural environment. They believe that the environmentally-conscious design initiative of the Sustinere Collection offers the interior design marketplace an opportunity to appeal to this interest.
Nathaniel Garcia, co founder and partner at eliile, has invited Raynes Roberts to showcase the new “Sustinere Collection” at the eliile showroom gallery. eliile represents objects, furniture and lighting brands from Europe and Canada, working closely with architects and designers. The space is transformed into a brand specific boutique/pop up shop every couple of months.
“It’s great to see the synergy of a master craftsman and designer like Mark collaborating with young designers to develop innovative furniture products for the Canadian marketplace,” commented Garcia.
Paus + Grun Custom Living specializes in hand-built, custom-designed furniture, made from reclaimed and salvaged lumber, producing beautiful and sustainable products using locally-sourced materials and blending traditional wood-crafting techniques in tune with modern design elements to exacting specifications. The hallmark of their work is in maintaining the natural patina and character of the wood by expertly applying innovative processing techniques and all natural-wood finishes. The company works primarily with domestic hardwood species, but also utilizes a network of sources to procure a variety of species to suit each particular project. The greatest value of their product is the environmental benefit of using reclaimed materials to conserve Canadian forests and reduce global carbon output from the harvest, milling, and transport of new timber.
